All right. I haven't explained Project BOTS, but let me give you a quick run-down. BOTS is a thing I'm doing where you do to the bookstore and just pick up a book. You buy the book and you read it. One book a month, maybe two. I typically read two books a month, so yeah.
BOTS Books, January
"Titus Groan" by Mervyn Peake and "The Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch. They were recommended to me, and honestly, I didn't like them.
Titus Groan of the Gormenghast trilogy is considered to be one of the three greatest fantasy series of all time, along with LOTR and Narnia. The reason is the language. Described by many, many people to be "poetry in prose," Titus Groan is the most beautifully written book I've ever read. It's boring as dirt, but its pretty dirt. I mean, the only exciting thing it had going for it was a plot twist, which was spoiled in the prologue. Seriously. I want to like it, and I kinda do, but it is a reeeally boring book. The only consolation is that it's short and pretty.
The Lies of Locke Lamora from the Gentleman Bastards (trilogy?) is a bit thicker than your average book, and is extremely confusing. I read two chapters of it, and never opened it again because I had no idea what was going on. Titus Groan was pretty clear about what was happening (nothing.) but LoLL jumps around in timelines, has a bazillion characters introduced at once, a confusing geography and situation, and a stale main character. It was also highly recommended, but I will tell you otherwise.
January's BOTS were boooring. I mean, seriously booooring. Read Titus Groan for the pretty language, but don't pick up Lies of Locke Lamora unless you want a challenge. I still have the books on my shelf for a rainy day, but I'm moving on to Febuary's BOTS, which are better BY FAR.
If you are doing Project BOTS, please let me know! I'd love to find a good book for March.
